Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright Pope-Leighey House

Frank Llyod Wright Pope-Leighey House

Nestled on the grounds of the historic Woodlawn estate, the Frank Lloyd Wright Pope-Leighey House offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore a stunning example of Usonian architecture, a style created by Wright to provide affordable, beautifully designed homes for middle-class Americans.

Commissioned in 1939 by journalist Loren Pope, the house was originally built in Falls Church, Virginia. In 1946, it was purchased by Robert and Marjorie Leighey. When plans for the construction of Interstate 66 threatened its existence in the 1960s, Mrs. Leighey generously donated the home to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which relocated it to its current site at Woodlawn. She was granted lifetime residency and lived in the home until her death in 1983.

Though modest in size at just 1,200 square feet, the Pope-Leighey House is rich in architectural detail. Wright’s design showcases harmony with nature through natural materials, clerestory windows, a cantilevered roof, and radiant floor heating—an innovation at the time. The home’s built-in furnishings and thoughtful use of space make it a true hidden gem for design lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
